You’ve got to love a Banana Ninny-Nonny, a culinary treat so simple yet utterly impossible to resist. Best of all it combines healthy food – the banana – with sinful amounts of chocolate goodness. What’s not to like? Here are three simply delicious sweet BBQ bakes. All you need is the ingredients plus a roll of aluminium and you’re ready to rock ‘n’ roll.
Banana Ninny-Nonny recipe
Take one banana. Keep the skin on. Slice it down the middle, keeping the end where it was chopped off the tree joined. Take your favourite chocolate bar – a Mars, a Snickers, a Whispa or whatever – and stuff it between the halves of banana. Then wrap the whole thing tightly in cooking foil and bake it on the grill. There are no words for how nice the combination of sweet, hot banana and melted chocolate is.
Tips:
- Pimp your ninny-nonny with posh chocolate for grown-ups, something with a high cocoa level and loads of flavour. Maybe salted caramel dark chocolate or rum and raisin
- Two to avoid: mint chocolate is vile. Banana and mint don’t go. Nor does orange chocolate, which just tastes weird with banana
- Best eaten with a spoon or knife and fork
- Serve it with fresh cream or Vegan cream
Baked cinnamon apple recipe
For full-on healthy baked tastiness grab some crunchy brown sugar, a big apple and some powdered cinnamon. Peel the apple then roll it in the cinnamon. Wipe a tiny amount of vegetable oil or butter on the foil to make it sticky and sprinkle brown sugar on in it before wrapping the foil tightly around the apple. The end result is a symphony of fruit and sweetness.
Tips:
- A cooking apple adds exciting tartness, bringing a dramatic sweet-sour contrast to the flavour
- Be warned. It is mind-blowing served with custard
- Love surprises? Cut the apple in half, core it, then stuff the middle with something magical like a strawberry, a chunk of chocolate, raisins, a grape, whatever you fancy
Baked berries with honey recipe
Buy berries. As many different berries as you can find. Mix them together. Then wrap individual portions in foil along with a generous spoonful of honey. The fruit cooks while holding its shape and the honey blends in to give everything a rich, warming flavour full of summer goodness.
Tips:
- Use more honey for a sweeter experience, less for something tart
- It goes perfectly with ice cream, from regular kiddie vanilla to sophisticated ice cream flavours for grown ups
- Chocolate ice cream tastes ridiculously good with baked fruit whatever your age
- Sprinkle chocolate chips or yoghurt chips on top for added indulgence
Hopefully that has given you some fresh ideas for uber-simple BBQ bakes. Go forth, imagine your own, and see what you come up with.
