Meat sits at the heart of millions if not billions of BBQ parties every year around the globe. But as climate change rumbles onwards, humanity does its best to slow it down, animal welfare becomes ever-more important and we value our long term health more, Veganism is growing super-fast.
It isn’t a new thing. For thousands of years humans mostly ate plants, with the occasional bit of meat and fish when they could catch it. In wealthier countries the meat eating habit took hold in the 1800s and by the twentieth century some people ate red meat every day. Now we know better, and experts recommend we only eat red meat once or twice a week, if that. Processed meats like ham, bacon and sausages actually have serious health warnings attached, OK for special occasions but otherwise too full of dangerous carcinogens for comfort.
By 2025 there were around 88 million Vegans in the world, about 1.5% of the total population. 67% of Vegans are female. In India the total is 11% of the population and even the meat-loving USA has a fast-growing community of more than 13.4 million Vegans. Vegan or not, dairy alternatives are used by 40% of all consumers. In 2023 over 700,000 people tapped into the annual Veganuary campaign. Now everyone knows a Vegan diet is lower in Cholesterol and higher in fibre than a meat-based lifestyle, it is fast becoming the healthiest choice.
Vegetarian and pescatarian BBQs are simple enough to handle. Just cut out the meat, the fish or both. But Vegan BBQ recipes are a bit more tricky, since many foods you wouldn’t imagine would fall under the Vegan no-no list actually do.
If you’re hosting Vegans at your next barbie, where do you start? Here are some links to excellent Vegan BBQ recipes everyone can enjoy and, at the end, some photos of the fantastic barbecues we sell, everything from seriously big and permanent to portable and small.
