Did you watch Chelsea Flower Show on TV? We did, and we were thrilled to see garden mirrors making a statement. Here’s what you need to know about outdoor mirrors, an instant way to completely change your garden vibe with light, reflections, mystery, and the illusion of space.
About garden mirrors – And why we love them so much
According to the TV presenters at Chelsea, mirrors for gardens are an excellent way to change the look and feel of a space. We have an enormous collection of them, in all sorts of gorgeous styles, from modern to traditional. Some of them are huge at almost a metre and a half tall, born for drama. So why are they such a cool garden design essential?
Using light creatively
First, let’s explore light. A garden mirror captures light then throws it out again into the surroundings, adding a bright glow to the proceedings. Placed in a secluded corner it adds life thanks to the shards of light it throws around, the angle and effects of which changes as the sun moves across the sky to provide different effects. It even reflects moonlight to give the garden a magical night time beauty.
How mirrors for gardens reflect loveliness
Next, reflections. Because a mirror reflects the views in front of it, you get stunning reflected planting that doubles the space, making it appear twice as rich and verdant. Place a beautiful garden mirror behind a specimen plant if you like, to reflect the rear of the plant back at you. Or, as above, angle them to reflect lovely brickwork or fancy stonework.
You might want to move the mirror around until you find the perfect location and angle, the one giving you the most interesting and attractive reflected views.
Using mirrored surfaces to suggest more space
Third, space. The more mirrors you add to the garden, the larger the space starts to feel. Imagine a tiny city patio with high brick walls on every side. Hang a garden mirror on each wall for a complex and fascinating series of reflections that throw the walls outwards to make the area feel so much bigger, more open, brighter and lighter. It makes an instant impact and takes no time to achieve.
Creating surprises designed to delight
Fourth, surprises. Does your garden contain secret spaces where you can sit in solitude and enjoy the lovely green-ness of outdoor life? Imagine what it’ll look like with a mirror hanging or standing in the space? Again it’ll open the space right up, giving you the pleasure of exciting reflections and views you wouldn’t otherwise get.
The practical bit…
Some of our exterior mirrors are made from glass, others are made from a special, very tough reflective plastic with the same beautiful properties as glass. The frames are usually metal. They come with fixings on the back for hanging, or you can simply stand or lean them against a fence, a wall, the shed, even a tree.
Built to stay outdoors, every design we stock is rugged and tough, built to last and made to look amazing for years to come.
We have a choice of different designs, everything from contemporary to traditional. Choose GLS products and they all go together really well. You can mix and match different shapes, sizes and frame colours to make a dazzling display hung on a wall or leaning against it.
Add a source of light and heat and the magic carries on late into the night whether or not there’s moonlight, reflecting the flames from your chiminea, firepit or firebowl to add thrilling visuals to the event.
