Chimalin AFC clay makes this pizza oven extra-sturdy.

The oven part of the array, the white curved shell, is made from a unique fireproof clay called Chimalin AFC clay. It took its inventors a full 8 years to develop and it’s a revolutionary material. Using this special clay to make chimineas, fire pits and outdoor ovens means they won’t crack through thermal shock, something that ordinary clay can do when the temperature differences are too dramatic for the material to withstand. This alone makes the Pizzaro an excellent buy. In this case the clay is left its natural pale colour, with no glaze.

Practical and easy to use as well as handsome, all you need is a stand to balance it on and you’re ready to go. It bakes wonderful pizza but you can also bake biscuits, breads and cakes in it. Even garlic bread.

  • The traditional dome shape looks lovely in any outdoor setting, contemporary to traditional
  • The traditional cooking function involves setting a fire directly inside the oven
  • It’s ideal for cooking one pizza at a time
  • It can also cook fantastic one-pot recipes in it – all you need is a quality cast iron cookpot
  • You’ll find full user instructions inside when it arrives
  • The recommended fuel is wood, which adds a fabulous flavour to your food
  • It’s guaranteed for a full 5 years against cracking from thermal shock
  • There’s no need to cure it before using it for the first time because the clay is formulated to resist dramatic temperature differences

Use the special stand as shown, complete with a useful wooden rack for safely storing your ingredients and keeping your outdoor cooking accessories in one place. Or DIY it and place the oven on a surface of your own that you’ve prepared.

Pizzaro pizza oven assembly instructions

The flat base and dome are made separately. You’ll need to fix them together. Because it’s a great quality item it’s very heavy, best lifted by at least two people.

First, put the flat base on the assembled pizza oven stand – or position it on another flat surface you’ve prepared. Then mix the fire cement powder with water until you get a peanut butter-like texture and thickness. Too thin and it won’t work.

Use a spatula or scraper to spread a 2-3mm layer of the fire cement around the rim of the upper face of the flat base. Then pick the dome up and carefully position it on the base, avoiding trapping your fingers. Once it’s placed centrally on the base, the job’s done.

To make this part easier, you can try putting the dome on top of two pieces of 50 x 25mm wood sitting on top of the flat base. Apply the fire cement then put the rear of the dome on the base while supporting the dome by its mouth. Then slip the wood out to let the dome connect to the base.

Last of all, use a wet cloth to get rid of excess cement inside and outside. Then let it dry for 24 hours before using the pizza oven for the first time.

Why do you need the fire cement? It’s a sealant to keep the heat in. It isn’t a glue, so doesn’t fix the base to the dome. Never try to pick the oven up by the mouth of the dome. Always pick the dome and base up together if you want to move the oven.

Where did pizza originate?

Pizza probably started off as an elaborate kind of focaccia, the flatbread the Romans loved and called panis focacius. Experts believe modern pizza was developed in the far south of Italy, in the city of Naples, during the late 1700s or early 1800s.
