All chimineas are not equal. Some are less than the best - but we don't sell any of those! Our clay chiminea collection is enormous. Every chim is made in Mexico using thick, strong red clay, the same kind of clay used to make terracotta plant pots. Some have a stunning glazed finish, others are patterned, with lovely 3d decor enhanced by an attractive painted finish.

We have chimineas inspired by Celtic design featuring dragons, knots and more.  Some need a stand, some come with their own stand, others are free-standing. But they all come with the classic Mexican wide mouth, which is the reason why they burn so impressively. They also burn clean and hot, with very little ash or leftovers.

Contemporary or traditional, plain or decorated, there's something for every taste and every style of garden. And you can cook on them as well, making them even more versatile. Add a simple BBQ grill to cook 'delicious' with ease and flair.

Use yours as a simple and very effective patio heater. Gather around it for social events, a beautiful focal point for every celebration. Get drawn in by the magic of the flames. Add a neat floor protector from our chiminea accessories range and you can stand it safely on a lawn or deck without burning the grass, wood or composite material.

FAQs on Clay Chimineas

A clay chiminea is a traditional outdoor fireplace made from terracotta or clay. Originally used in Mexico, it's designed to burn wood efficiently and radiate heat through its rounded body and open front.

Before the first fire, you should:

  • Cure the chiminea: Start with small fires to gradually harden the clay
  • Use sand or lava rocks: Line the base to protect the clay from direct flames
  • Burn dry wood: Use kindling and build up slowly
Curing helps prevent cracks and prolongs the life of your chiminea.

Yes. Clay is sensitive to:

  • Thermal shock: Avoid adding cold water to a hot chiminea
  • Moisture and frost: Water can seep in and freeze, causing cracks
Always store your chiminea in a sheltered spot or use a weatherproof cover when not in use.

Yes, most clay chimineas should be elevated on a metal stand to:

  • Allow airflow beneath
  • Prevent heat damage to surfaces
  • Make the chiminea more stable and easier to use
Stands are usually included, but check the product listing to be sure.

Use only dry, seasoned hardwoods. Avoid:

  • Softwoods, which produce more smoke and creosote
  • Coal or charcoal, which can burn too hot and damage the clay
Never use accelerants like lighter fluid — they can damage the chiminea and are unsafe.

Some clay chimineas come with a grill or removable top for light cooking or toasting. However:

  • Check your model’s specifications
  • Avoid cooking directly in the fire chamber unless designed for it
For regular outdoor cooking, consider a purpose-built fire pit or BBQ.

For regular upkeep:

  • Remove ash after use (when fully cooled)
  • Wipe the outside with a damp cloth – avoid harsh chemicals
  • Check for cracks or weather damage and seal with a clay repair kit if needed
Store under cover when not in use to extend its lifespan.

Yes, covering your chiminea helps:

  • Prevent water from seeping in and freezing
  • Protect against cracking from weather extremes
  • Keep debris and insects out
Choose a breathable, weatherproof cover that fits snugly over the top and body.
