We asked people ‘why buy wooden garden furniture?’

We’ve asked around to find out why people are buying wood garden furniture in preference to modern materials, and the answers are pretty interesting.

For a start there’s an environmental element to some people’s choice. When we choose responsibly-sourced wood it can make a real difference in our efforts to cut down greenhouse gas emissions. Wood holds onto carbon, a natural CO2 store that keeps the climate-changing substance safely locked inside. Wood also has a low ’embodied energy’ compared to most other building materials – in other words the total amount of energy used to cut, prepare and transport the wood and make it ready for use is less than many materials.

It’s also a looks and texture thing. The lovely appearance of wood always appeals to the eye with its natural feel and patterning. It takes all sorts of exciting finishes as well, which means you can often re-paint or re-stain it to keep things fresh and different.

Wood feels warm to the touch and it lasts and lasts, especially when given special treatment to weatherproof it. Without a finish, or if the finish fades or wears off, natural wood turns a beautiful silvery grey, blending into the background. And being easily re-useable, you can ultimately use old wood garden furniture to make other wooden items. Alternatively break it up, pile it in a corner of the garden and let insects and other small creatures take it over as a habitat and food source.
